My Journey

The Story Behind MD Retreat

MD Retreat holds special meaning for me. “MD” stands for my name, Manh Do—”M” for Mountain and “D” for Dew, symbolizing my origins and the simplicity of a son of the Northwest mountains of Vietnam.

I grew up poor in remote Lai Chau far North province of Vietnam. Unable to afford college, I moved to Sapa in 2005 to work at a small guesthouse, where I met travelers from around the world. Motivated to learn, I practiced English with guests and moved to Hanoi in 2006, seeking new opportunities and language skills.

Hanoi overwhelmed me at first. With little money, no family, and no college degree, I was rejected by many hotels but didn’t give up. Eventually, a small hotel hired me as a security guard, and I used my first salary to study English, practicing daily with guests.

As my English improved, I began learning Japanese to better understand different cultures. I advanced through various roles—receptionist, tour guide, and tour operator—gaining valuable experience.

In 2010, I opened my first homestay in Mai Chau to support my family, organizing daily tours for travelers. My homestay was twice recommended by Lonely Planet as the best place to stay in they Nortt and grew quickly, allowing me to build a new home for my family.

By 2016, Mai Chau faced rapid, unplanned development. I decided to sell my homestay and search for untouched lands, finally choosing Pu Luong Nature Reserve. There, I worked with locals and authorities, helping the community rise from poverty. After two years, Pu Luong Eco Garden was completed, and the area’s poverty rate dropped significantly.

I also shared my knowledge, consulting for other remote areas to develop community tourism, like Ninh Binh Retreat and Muong Long Eco Garden.

Creating The MD Bavi Retreat

The pandemic deepened my appreciation for nature’s healing power. I moved my family to Ba Vi, west of Hanoi, starting a new chapter in sustainable mountain tourism. Over five years, we cultivated the land, built organic farms, and in 2024 began constructing The MD Bavi Retreat. We moved in during summer 2025 and opened to guests in early 2026.

The retreat includes

  • A 5,000m² tropical garden with an eight-room guesthouse inspired by traditional Thai stilt houses, featuring natural materials and beautiful views.
  • The “Rebirth” house, built from recycled materials, offers spaces for sunrise tea, quiet work, reading, and family music evenings.
  • Muong Mo Restaurant, led by my childhood friend Long, serves authentic Northwest cuisine.
  • An eco pool with mineral water and natural stone steps, surrounded by green lawns and vibrant plants.

The second zone is a 2,500m² organic farm, free from pesticides, offering fresh, clean produce for guests and family.

Guests can enjoy peaceful stays, fresh cuisine, cycling, hiking, village visits, gardening, and cooking classes. We offer flexible tours to Vietnam’s top heritage destinations.

The MD Bavi Retreat marks my twenty-year journey from a poor boy in the northern mountains, striving to offer the finest travel experiences. My family and I are looking forward to welcoming you with open arms.
